Media: Recycled Bottles, PU Foam, Light Bulbs

Size: 1500 mm W × 1500 mm D × 3000 mm H

Date: November 2022

Abstract

Enchanted is a light installation built entirely from recycled bottles, turning what was initially discarded into a meaningful decoration. A Christmas tree made of glass and plastic bottles glows from within, demonstrating that art can create beauty while also celebrating sustainability.

Team: Patience Ma, Max Guo, Dora Li, Leer Zhou, Sabrina Wong, and Kai Geng.

My Roles: contributed to constructing the tree and, thanks to my height, served as the team’s “ladder”.

Story

Our team set out to remake a holiday symbol as a statement on sustainability. We collected a variety of discarded plastic and glass bottles, fixed them with PU foam into the shape of a tree, and wove light bulbs through the main frame. As the bulbs turned on, lights of different hues burst out of the ends of the bottles, imitating the various decorations a real Christmas tree would have. The result resembled a real Christmas tree while also conveying the message that creativity and sustainability can go hand in hand.

Process

We gathered bottles, sorted them by color, and fixed them on top of each other with PU foam. Small light bulbs were attached to a frame within the tree to bring the work to life. I contributed across various tasks and often served as the team’s “ladder.”
